Rebuilding Day 2009 Facilities

Bryant Elementary School
Bryant Elementary School is located in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District, one of San Francisco's most vibrant neighborhoods. Our small two story school, with colorful outdoor murals, brightens the congested inner city street. A dedicated staff and long hours of operation herald Bryant as a constant force in bettering the lives of our urban families.
 
Circus Center
Circus Center encompasses a professional performing company, a student performing troupe, and a school with programs and classes at all levels in acrobatics, flying trapeze, hand-balancing, contortion, juggling, teeterboard, wire walking, clowning and anything in the air, upside down, backwards and seemingly impossible.
 
Daniel Webster Elementary School

Daniel Webster School has a variety of educational programs developed to educate and enrich our culturally diverse student population, including English Plus classes in Spanish and Chinese. The exchange of ideas and respect among students, faculty, administration, and parents mirror the school’s philosophy and are apparent when visiting the school and observing its daily routine.
 
International Studies Academy
International Studies Academy is a small, intimate learning community in which close relationships develop among the students, faculty and parents and the values of cooperation, caring and creativity are emphasized. The school's primary mission is to provide a rigorous course of study in a multi-cultural environment where the knowledge, skills the larger global community.
 
Japanese Community Youth Council
Over the past three decades, JCYC has become one of San Francisco’s most successful youth organizations. While still committed to children and youth from the Japanese American community, JCYC has evolved and grown into an organization, which annually serves over 8,000 young people from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
 
Korean Center, Inc.
Korean Center, Inc. (KCI) is the only comprehensive social service agency in San Francisco dedicated to serving the Korean American community. All Bay Area residents are welcome to participate in the diverse programs offered at KCI. KCI is also a leader in promoting Korean culture in San Francisco, and hosts various cultural events throughout the year.

Lakeshore Elementary School
Lakeshore is a diverse community, drawing students from all parts of San Francisco. There is very strong parent and community involvement with valued enrichment programs in the arts, technology, science, drama, poetry, architecture. The Lakeshore faculty and staff make every effort to provide each student with a stimulating and challenging educational environment.
 
Meadows Livingstone School
For over 25 years, Meadows-Livingstone School has specialized in educating African-American children to reach their full academic, social, emotional and creative potential. They are a small school - fewer than 30 students - where we treat teachers, students and families as valued members of a caring community.
 
Meridian Intern Program
Founded in 1996, the Meridian Interns Program (MIP) is a paid internship for low-income teens from all over San Francisco in which Artist Instructors integrate art-making workshops with training in job-related skills. Conceived as a natural offshoot of the programming of Meridian Gallery, MIP transforms the knowledge and energy of the people and resources associated with Meridian Gallery into a unique educational experience, providing approximately 34 youth each year the chance to work with and learn from professional interdisciplinary artists.
 
Miraloma Elementary School
Miraloma Elementary School is committed to meeting the academic, social, physical and emotional needs of their students so that they will be successful, self-motivated learners and productive citizens. Students will acquire knowledge and skills through a rich and varied classroom curriculum.
 
Mission Neighborhood Centers
Mission Neighborhood Centers, Inc. strives to improve the quality of life in the greater Mission Community of San Francisco by providing culturally sensitive human services that both support and empower individuals and families.
 
Stonestown YMCA Preschool
Located in the southwest quadrant of San Francisco, the Stonestown Family YMCA has been serving the community since 1954. Committed to a total wellness approach to living, they have programs and services that attend to one's spirit, mind and body.
 
Tenderloin Housing Clinic Mission Hotel
With 248 rooms, the Mission hotel is San Francisco’s largest SRO. In 2007 a major renovation was concluded which built entirely new common bathrooms, a new woman’s bathroom and increased the number of disabled access rooms. THC continues to maintain and upgrade this hotel to ensure residents have an affordable and safe place to live.
 
TNDC After School Program
TNDC's After School Program (TASP) is a beehive of positively charged youthful energy. About 65 kids, ages 5 to 17, come to TASP at 225 Eddy St. daily with 250 attending over the course of a year. There is a playroom for the little kids and a separate room for older teenagers to do their homework and use computers. The main room is home to all kinds of activities from computer stations for games and the Internet to dancing and art expression to tables for homework.
 
Urban Services YMCA of SF
Urban Services YMCA is the social services arm of the YMCA of San Francisco. We provide life changing programs that promote Academic Achievement, Strengthening Families, and Safe and Healthy Communities.
 
Whitney Young Child Development Center

Whitney Young Child Development Center (WYCDC) provides full-day childcare for preschool children of working parents, half-day (before and after school) enrichment for K-6th graders, along with services for developmentally and physically handicapped children. WYCDC provides comprehensive and fully mainstreamed child development services at two San Francisco child development sites - one at Bayview/Hunters Point and the other in the Haight/Ashbury district.
 
Wu Yee Children's Services
Wu Yee Children's Services' mission is to promote the healthy development of children and families by providing high-quality, culturally and linguistically appropriate children and family support services. Our vision is to create an environment which provides children a healthy foundation for future development and enables families to support themselves while building strong and viable communities.
 
Young Ideas Community Home
The Young Ideas Community Home provides residential care, supervision and life skill services to developmentally delayed children and young adults. The home serves up to 8 residents at a time and annually 100 residents. Residents must prioritize finishing high school and be responsible for regular chores. Executive Director Keith St. Clare emphasizes that “we want our teenagers to learn the power of sharing and caring-that includes work.”

 


Past Rebuilding Day Facility Projects

Alemany Farm
Alemany Farm is a project of the Alemany Resident Management Corporation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving conditions in the Alemany Community, a 165-unit public housing development beset by high unemployment and recurring violence. The Alemany Resident Management Corporation believes that we can address the root causes of violence by providing youth with meaningful opportunities for advancement.

Arab Cultural & Community Center
The mission of the ACCC is to serve both the Arab-American and the greater Bay Area community through cultural programs, outreach, and social services. The ACCC is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Arab culture through the arts, performance, and education, in addition to providing social services such as legal referrals, career counseling, after school programs, ESL classes, cultural competency training, health programs, and more.

Bret Harte Child Development Center
Bret Harte Child Development Center has a Preschool and After School program for children from Kindergarten through Fourth grade. We provide a program that promotes each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth and competency through developmentally appropriate experiences.

Chinatown CDC, William Penn Hotel
The Mission of the Chinatown Community Development Center is to build community and enhance the quality of life for San Francisco residents. Based in the Chinatown neighborhood, Chinatown CDC also serves other San Francisco neighborhoods, including North Beach and the Tenderloin.

Connecting Point
Connecting Point is the centralized intake and placement center for all families seeking shelter in San Francisco.  Under a grant from San Francisco’s Human Services Agency, Connecting Point places families into Compass Family Center as well as the city’s other family shelters.

Ella Hill Hutch Community Center
The Ella Hill Hutch Community Center has served the Fillmore community for over 25 years, offering a comprehensive blend of support services. Its programs include after-school programs in three local housing developments, mentoring, tutoring, college prep, recreation, team sports, career planning, counseling, behavioral health, case management, computer literacy, job training, parenting support, and job placement. At night, it functions as a homeless shelter.

Friends of St. Francis Child Care
Friends of St. Francis Childcare Center, a community-based non-profit, endeavors to enrich San Francisco and the world by providing best practice childcare services to culturally and economically diverse families while serving parents through an enduring community of staff, peer parent and professional support.

Jelani, Inc./Mission Recovery House
Jelani Inc. is a non-profit community-based organization in the Bayview/Hunter's Point district in San Francisco. The primary goal of Jelani Inc. is to help and support those who are “chemically dependent” and their families. The agency's mission is to offer comprehensive treatment plans to help the individual, as well as their families.

John Muir Elementary School
Located in the Western Addition of San Francisco, the school is home to a very diverse culturally rich student body. As a professional development school and anchor for the San Francisco State University's Muir Alternative Teaching Program, John Muir brings teacher training into the classroom, providing teacher training candidates with both relevant experience and specially designed courses adapted for the urban classroom.

KIPP Bayview Academy
With longer school days, committed parents, students and teachers, KIPP Bayview Academy provides a safe, highly structured and academically rigorous college-preparatory middle school for this community. And as a public school, it is done at no cost to the families it serves.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic School
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School is dedicated to the principles of peace, brotherhood, and equality. Its goal is to ensure that all students achieve their maximum potential in academic, social, and physical endeavors.

McKinley Elementary School
Located in the heart of San Francisco, McKinley is a small school serving a diverse group of approximately 280 children from many areas of the city. McKinley’s administration, staff, and teachers are committed to building a school climate in which all children feel safe and are encouraged to express themselves.

Mission Branch YMCA
Since 1953, the Mission YMCA has been building strong kids, strong families and strong communities from our location in the midst of the Mission, Bernal Heights, Glen Park and Excelsior neighborhoods. The Mission YMCA is a family center featuring childcare, team programming, a senior center, and a variety of youth and community programs.

Stonestown Family YMCA
Located in the southwest quadrant of San Francisco, the Stonestown Family YMCA has been serving the community since 1954. Committed to a total wellness approach to living, they have programs and services that attend to one's spirit, mind and body.

TNDC, Ritz Hotel
Along with three other Tenderloin Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels, the Ritz was purchased in November, 1991 by a nonprofit corporation formed by TNDC and Chinese Community Housing Corporation. TNDC oversaw the renovation and manages the building.

The Village Project
The Village Project provides a safe environment for after-school and summer enrichment programs for children under 14. They implement activities in an inclusive manner for children who traditionally lacking mentorship and services.

Women’s Re-entry and Restorative Justice Center
Program for formerly incarcerated women who have been affected by violence, and/or substance abuse. The empty building was painted during an off-season project and was brought back to life on Rebuilding Day. Volunteers built counters and dividers to create a reception/entry area, shelving and counters for the library, laid new flooring and painted a mural to warm up the children's room. The center was able to open its doors soon afterward.

Potrero Hill Neighborhood House
Multi-purpose multi-generational community center in continuous operation for nearly a century, serving those in most need with an emphasis on youth and education. Volunteers painted interiors, landscaped exterior and created a focal point in the entrance lobby for this historic building.

Tenderloin Housing Clinic – Looper Residence
Supportive housing for homeless San Franciscans with on-site counseling and referrals. Volunteers painted all common areas of this 3-story SRO Hotel, greatly improving the atmosphere from top to bottom. A donation of new carpet for the lobby, stairwells and hallways brightened the residence.

Hunters Point Family – Girls 2000/Peacekeepers
Based in public housing, this is a youth development agency that provides holistic educational, social, and enrichment programs. Volunteers renovated two sites that provide a safe haven for youth including interior painting, shelving and minor repairs. One site was also landscaped and the other received a custom-made security gate.

Hunters Point Community Youth Park
Serving Bayview residents with educational, recreational and cultural programs with a focus on youth activities. Painted all interior rooms, including cafeteria, recreation room, and office space.  Made custom stainless steel countertops for the kitchen, brought dance studio back to working condition, and worked with a local artist to create a mural for the courtyard.

Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center
Neighborhood center serving low to moderate income children, youth, families and seniors with preschool education, after-school programs, senior services, and civic engagement opportunities. Working closely with center staff, volunteers painted much of the large interior space and built new planters for the garden.

Treasure Island Homeless Development Initiative
A meeting space serving formerly homeless low-income families through a collaboration of 20 community-based organizations specializing in affordable housing. Services include a weekly food pantry and job training programs. Volunteers breathed new life into this shell of a building, upgrading both interior and exterior areas. Renovations included a new fence, exterior signage, redesigned entry counter, painting, carpeting, spatial planning, and light repairs throughout. 

Miraloma Elementary – SFUSD Elementary school
Volunteers helped school staff implement their plan to renovate the school library with new shelving and brighter paint scheme.  Extensive weeding and landscaping was also done at this site.

Jelani Inc.
Serving pregnant and parenting women and men and their children with a residential treatment program and a transitional facility. Parents live with their children and attend programs in relapse prevention, domestic violence, parenting and life skills.  Volunteers painted interior of the 3-story residential facility with a focus on making the atmosphere feel more like a home. Installed new utilities for kitchen and revived backyard space.

Oakes Children’s Center
Serving emotionally disturbed and developmentally delayed children ages 5 - 19 from public schools and Oakes' Day Treatment School. Installed new carpet, repaired back stairs and fence, built picnic tables for backyard, installed fiberglass wall panels, and painted throughout interior of old firehouse facility. 

Mission High School
Public high school with special program within athletic department that encourages students to go to college and avoid gang violence. Volunteers painted hallways and gym, designed and implemented large mural for outdoor basketball court. 

Jefferson Pre-K - SFUSD
Early childhood education serving low income families with a Head Start program, an in-house social worker, nurse and mental health consultant.  Extensive playground renovation, including benches, rocks, grass, planters and a new play structure. 

Bayview Hunters Point Youth Foundation
Multi-purpose social and human service youth center. This 3- story building got a complete makeover in partnership with construction companies. High-level renovations include a kitchen and bathroom remodel, flooring and ceiling work, extensive plumbing, spatial design and upgrades throughout the building.
